Not all Christians exercise the same degree of faith. Some believe that
their problem may be too hard for the Lord to solve. Some believe that God is
indeed all-powerful, but they lack the faith and confidence that He will do the
miracle for them, so they never ask Him to perform it. Yet others believe that
there is nothing too hard for the Lord, that He is all-powerful, and they ask Him
in faith to perform miracles, trusting Him whether He performs the miracle or
not! These varying attitudes and levels of faith can be seen in biblical accounts,
and range from those who are weak in their faith to those who take God at His
Word!
During the earthly ministry of Jesus, we see varying degrees of faith
exhibited in those whom Jesus encountered. He cast out a mute spirit from the
son of a father who wavered in his faith (Mark 9:17-24). Jesus healed a leper
who knew that He could heal, but was unsure as to whether or not He would
(Mark 1:40-45). Jesus healed the servant of a centurion commander who had so
much faith that he declared that Jesus could perform healing simply by speaking
the word of healing from afar off (Luke 7:1-10).
These examples help us to understand that God can respond to us
according to our faith. Yet, none of these biblical examples confirm that God is
constrained to perform any act of mercy for any of us – because He is sovereign.
However, as we grow and mature in our walk with the Lord, we trust that He
knows what’s best for us and we learn to say “yes” to His Will, and not our own.
The wonderful thing is that He is faithful to us even when we are not faithful to
Him and according to His divine nature, He responds to all of us no matter what
level of faith we may present to Him. This confirms to us that God is Good all
the time, and all the time, God is Good! When we can see this truth, it is then
that He begins to turn weak faith into great faith!!!
